Carbohydrates
Carbohydrates are a great for energy, but keeping in mind the ratio of protein, carbohydrates and vegetables.
Carbohydrates:
fast releasing energy – (eat less of these, they cause sugar spikes )
- Large potatoes
- White bread
- White rice
- White pasta
- Sweets
- Chocolates
- Cakes, pastries, desserts
Slow releasing carbohydrates (these are ok on a low carb diet, but in moderation)
- Brown rice, well cooked
- Brown bread (pitta, wholemeal bread) gluten free bread is ok as it is usually has good fibre sources
- Brown pasta (unless you are gluten free, brown rice pasta or buckwheat pasta are ok)
- Oats
- Peas can be used as a carbohydrate because of their sugar content
- Quinoa
- Sweet potatoes
- Small baby potatoes with their skins on
- Squash
