Carbohydrates are a great for energy, but keeping in mind the ratio of protein, carbohydrates and vegetables.

fast releasing energy – (eat less of these, they cause sugar spikes )

  • Large potatoes
  • White bread
  • White rice
  • White pasta
  • Sweets
  • Chocolates
  • Cakes, pastries, desserts

Slow releasing carbohydrates (these are ok on a low carb diet, but in moderation)

  • Brown rice, well cookedrice
  • Brown bread (pitta, wholemeal bread) gluten free bread is ok as it is usually has good fibre sources
  • Brown pasta (unless you are gluten free, brown rice pasta or buckwheat pasta are ok)
  • Oats
  • Peas can be used as a carbohydrate because of their sugar content
  • Quinoa
  • Sweet potatoes
  • Small baby potatoes with their skins on
  • Squash
